Matt Gorgen was the Stone Crabs closer to start the season in 2009. He collected a career low 0.57 ERA in 28 appearances. During this time he was 4-0 with 15 saves and 59 strikeouts. His performance on the mound led to being nominated to the mid and post season all-star teams in the Florida State League. He was also named the Rays Minor League Reliever of the Year.
Gorgen was drafted by the Rays in the 16th round of the 2008 draft out of University of California. He has been nominated to the all-star team in each of his three seasons of pro ball. Matt made his debut in 2008 with the Hudson Valley Renegades. He skipped A ball and went directly to the Advanced-A Stone Crabs to start the 2009 season. He was then promoted to AA Montgomery late in 2009 where he remained for the entire 2010 season.
Following the 2010 season, Gorgen was sent to the Arizona Diamondbacks as the player to be named later in the Chad Qualls trade earlier in the season.
