Darin Downs was a member of the starting rotation for the Stone Crabs during the inaugural season in 2009. Downs compiled a 12-4 record while holding a 2.00 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 19 starts prior to his promotion to Montgomery in August. His performance was near the top of the leader boards in the Florida State League while being named to the mid and post season all-star teams.
Downs was originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2003 draft by the Chicago Cubs. He spent six seasons in the Cubs organization before being traded to the Rays in 2008. He made is Rays debut in 2008 as a member of the Vero Beach Devil Rays, split time with the Stone Crabs and Montgomery Biscuits in 2009.
Downs suffered a serious injury in his second game for the Biscuits in 2009 when a line drive back to the mound struck him in the head. He recovered quickly and beyond expectations, returned to the mound for Montgomery in April 2010. He spent much of the 2010 season on the mound for the Biscuits before being promoted to Durham.
Following the 2010 season, Downs signed a minor league contract with the Florida Marlins and was invited to major league spring training.
