Szekely joined the Rays organization in 2005. He spent one season each as the manager for Southwest Michigan (2005), Visalia (2006), Vero Beach (2007) and Princeton (2008). In 2009, he took over his current role as the hitting coach for the Stone Crabs.
As a player, Szekely was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the second round of the 1982 draft. He enjoyed a nine year professional baseball career split between the Royals, Dodgers, Pirates, Blue Jays and Braves organization, making it as high as AAA.
