Stone Crabs Doubled Up by Palm Beach

The Stone Crabs could not overcomes a big second inning by the visiting Palm Beach Cardinals as they fell 12-6 on Tuesday night at Charlotte Sports Park.

Palm Beach set the tone by scoring seven runs in the second inning. A two run single by Austin Willson, two run triple by Magnerius Sierra, an RBI single by Edmundo Sosa, an RBI double by Chris Chinea and an RBI by Luke Dykstra gave the Cardinals a comfortable 7-0 lead.

The Stone Crabs got on the scoreboard by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kevin Padlo opened the inning with a triple to center. Padlo scored on a ground out by Ryan Boldt. Later in the inning, a single by Brandon Lowe would score David Rodriguez and make it 7-2.

Palm Beach added a run in the top of the fifth. They loaded the bases via a single by Randy Arozarena, a double by Leobaldo Pena and a walk to Sierra. Then Yoel Espinal issues a bases loaded free pass to Thomas Spitz to plate a run and increase the lead to 8-2.

The Stone Crabs countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jake Cronenworth led off the inning with an infield single followed by a walk to Brett Sullivan. Both runners would later score on a single and error on a ground ball by Kevin Padlo to make it 8-4.

Palm Beach would string together back to back two run innings in the eighth and ninth to extend their lead to 12-4.

The Stone Crabs would get two more runs in the ninth. Padlo led off the frame with a double to left. Dalton Kelly was then hit by a pitch and Boldt followed with a single to load the bases. Padlo and Kelly then scored on a single by Nathan Lukes. But that was all they could produce in the inning as they fell 12-6.

Genesis Cabrera was charged with the loss for the Stone Crabs. Connor Jones was the winning pitcher for Palm Beach.

The Stone Crabs look to put the brakes on the current 6-game losing streak during the series finale Wednesday morning at Charlotte Sports Park. Blake Bivens (0-1, 5.40) will get the ball for the Stone Crabs against Junior Fernandez (0-0, 1.93) for Palm Beach. First pitch is scheduled for 11am.
