The Stone Crabs extended their current winning streak to five games after winning the series opener against the Brevard County Manatees 7-3 on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Newly acquired Cuban outfielder Dayron Varona made his debut, helping lead the offense with 2 hits including a two run triple.
The Stone Crabs took the lead in the third inning and never looked back. Pat Blair doubled to right to lead off the inning. He scored on a single by Yoel Araujo to break the scoreless tie. The Stone Crabs loaded the bases with a single by Varona and a bunt by Kean Wong. Willy Adames would drive home two run with a single to center to give the Stone Crabs a 3-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs added three more runs an inning later. Armando Araiza and Blair singled to get things going. They both scored on an RBI triple by Varona. Varona later scored on a single by Wong to increase the lead to 6-0.
The Stone Crabs scored their final run of the night in the top of the seventh. Jake Bauers went deep to right for his fifth homer of the season to make it 7-0.
Brevard County scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the shut-out. But the Stone Crabs would hold on for the 7-3 win.
Chris Kirsch picked up the win for the Stone Crabs. Wei-Chung Wang suffered the loss.
The four game series continues on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Jacob Faria (7-1, 1.55) will go after his league leading eighth win against Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 4.38) for Brevard County.
