2014 Florida State League All-Star Game Preview

2014 All StarThe best in the Florida State League converge on McKechnie Field in Bradenton for the 53rd annual Florida State League All-Star Game tonight. Five Stone Crabs players along with the entire Stone Crabs pitching coach will be headed to the game to represent the Southern Division. Making the trip will be pitcher Kevin Brandt, first baseman Pat Leonard, catcher Justin O’Conner, shortstop Leonardo Reginatto and catcher Maxx Tissenbaum.

The festivities in Bradenton started last yesterday with the Pirates and Princesses 5K Home Run and the VIP Gala. Today’s big day starts with the All-Star Home Run Derby followed by the 53rd Annual Florida State League All-Star Game.

The format of the home run derby has changed this season. Instead of the tradition 10 out rounds, this year the first round will be timed for three minutes. The hitter has the time to take as many swings as possible during the time frame. Ball hit over the wall will county as two points while balls hit over a barrier on the field will be worth one point. The two hitters with the most points will advance into the final.

Eight hitters will participate in the home run derby. Stone Crabs Pat Leonard and Justin O’Conner will be joined by Josh Bell (Bradenton), Dante Bichette Jr (Tampa), Austin Green (Lakeland), KC Hobson (Dunedin), Bijan Rademacher (Daytona) and Adam Walker (Fort Myers).

Once the winner of the Home Run Derby is declared, the All-Star Game will get underway.

Since the game is being held in the home of the Bradenton Marauders, the South Diviision will be the home team. They are managed by the Stone Crabs coaching staff. Jared Sandberg will be the team manager, Joe Szekely is the hitting coach and Doc Watson is the pitching coach. The South Division roster is comprised of players from the Bradenton Marauders, Charlotte Stone Crabs, Fort Myers Miracle, Jupiter Hammerheads, Palm Beach Cardinals and St Lucie Mets. The visiting North Division will be represented by the coaching staff of the Daytona Cubs. Dave Keller is the team manager, Mariano Duncan the hitting coach and Ron Villone is the pitching coach. The North Division is comprised of player from the Brevard County Manatees, Clearwater Threshers, Daytona Cubs, Dunedin Blue Jays. Lakeland Flying Tigers and Tampa Yankees. The All-Star Home Run Derby begins at 5:30 and the 53rd Annual Florida State League All-Star Game to follow with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. There is a post-game concert and fireworks show immediately following the game.
