After heading into the ninth inning with a nice lead, the Stone Crabs fell apart in the home half of the inning as they lost to the Bradenton Marauders 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at McKechnie Field.
The Marauders took an early lead after scoring in the second inning. Max Maroff doubled to left and then scored on a triple by Jonathan Schwind. Schwind would later score on sac fly to give the Marauders a 2-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs were held scoreless until they tied the game in the sixth inning. Jonathan Quinonez singled to left followed by a double by Tommy Coyle. Quinonez scored on a sac fly by Leonardo Reginatto and Coyle came home on an RBI double by Pat Leonard to tie the game at 2-2.
The Stone Crabs grabbed their first lead of the afternoon in the top of the seventh inning. Justin O’Conner doubled to right followed by back to back walks to Josh Sale and Marty Gantt to load the bases. Both O’Conner and Sale scored on ground ball by Quinonez aided by a throwing error to give the Stone Crabs a 4-2 lead.
The Stone Crabs would pick up another run in the top of the eighth inning. Reginatto doubled to center and later scored on a ground ball by Sale tin increase the lead to 5-2.
Bradenton pulled closer to the Stone Crabs by scoring again in the bottom of the eighth. Raul Fortunato lead off the inning with a solo home run to pull them within two runs of the lead.
But it was the bottom of the ninth that would ultimately doom the Stone Crabs. A couple of errors, two hits and walk would lead to three Marauder runs which handed the Stone Crabs a 6-5 loss.
Jose Molina was charged with a blown save and the loss for the Stone Crabs. Robby Rowland was the winning pitcher for Bradenton.
The Stone Crabs are off on Monday before beginning a four game series against the Dunedin Blue Jays at home at Charlotte Sports Park.
