The Stone Crabs could not overcome the powerful offense of the St Lucie Mets as they lost 5-2 on Monday night at Charlotte Sports Park. Despite the loss, the Stone Crabs offense produced three extra base hits.
The Mets took advantage of early control problems from the rehabbing starter Alex Colome. Three walks, two wild pitches and a couple hits led to an early 2-0 lead for the Mets.
The Stone Crabs cut the lead in half by scoring in the home half of the second. Kes Carter tripled to right and then scored on an RBI single by Tyler Goeddel.
The Mets countered with another run in the third. Jairo Perez tripled then score on a ground ball by Cam Maron to increase their lead to 3-1.
The Stone Crabs scored again in the third. Josh Sale opened the frame with a triple to right. Sale later scored on a sac fly by Andrew Toles to pull within a run of the lead.
The Stone Crabs stayed close until the top of the eighth when the Mets pushed across two insurance lead. The Stone Crabs could not recover and they fell 5-2.
Colome was charged with the loss.
The Stone Crabs try to avoid the sweep as they host the Mets in the series finale Tuesday morning at Charlotte Sports Park. Austin Pruitt is scheduled to start the finale with first pitch scheduled for 10 am.
