The Stone Crabs were swept by the Fort Myers Miracle in Wednesday’s doubleheader at Hammond Stadium. The Stone Crabs have now lost five straight.
The Stone Crabs fell in game one by the score of 4-2. They outhit the Miracle in the first game but were unable to rally late to win.
The Miracle jumped out to an early lead by scoring in the first inning. Jorge Polanco doubled to center and then scored on an RBI single by Dalton Hicks to take a 1-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs tied the game in the top of the second. Pat Leonard was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He advanced to from first to third on back to back wild pitches. Marty Gantt picked up an RBI with a single to right to score Leonard and tie the game 1-1.
The game remained tied until the fifth inning when Fort Myers pushed across two runs. They loaded the bases with three walks. Polanco and Hicks each knocked in a run to give the Miracle a 3-1 lead.
The Miracle added to their lead in the next inning as they once again loaded the bases thanks to walks. A bases loaded walk scored Max Kepler to increase the lead to 4-1.
The Stone Crabs rallied in the the seventh. Tyler Goeddel double to left to lead off the inning. He advanced to third on a single by Andrew Toles. Goeddel scored on a sac fly by Hector Guevara to cut the lead in half. Leonardo Reginatto then singled to center to put the tying run on the bases but a strikeout to end the threat and the game left the Stone Crabs with a 4-2 loss.
Leonel Santiago was charged with the loss in his Rays organization debut. Alex Wimmers was the winner and Brian Gilbert notched the save.
After a brief break, game two of the doubleheader got started much like the first game with the Miracle jumping out to an early lead and the Stone Crabs not able to recover. They Stone Crabs found themselves in a huge deficit that even an five run fifth inning couldn’t overcome.
The Miracle took the lead in the first on a two run homer by Adam Walker.
They increased their lead in the second by scoring four more runs. The Miracle loaded the bases to get the threat started. Levi Michael had an RBI single followed by a two run triple by Jorge Polanco. Polanco later scored on an error to give them a 6-0 lead.
But Fort Myers wasn’t done as they scored two more in the third. Niko Goodrum delivered an RBI triple and then scored on a passed ball to increase the lead to 8-0.
The Stone Crabs got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Pat Leonard doubled to left to leaf off the inning. Mary Gantt doubled him home to put a run on the board for the Stone Crabs.
The Stone Crabs carried that momentum into the fifth where they struck for a big inning. Pat Leonard had a two run double and then later scored on a single by Maxx Tissenbaum. Kes Cater later singles home Tissenbaum. Marty Gantt would score the fifth run of the frame on a wild pitch to pull the Stone Crabs within two runs of the lead 8-6.
Fort Myers distanced themselves by scoring two more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-6 lead.
The Stone Crabs could not generated any more runs as they fell 10-6 and were swept in the doubleheader.
Bruedlin Suero suffered the loss for the Stone Crabs. Tim Shibuya was the winning pitcher for Fort Myers.
The series concludes on Thursday night at Hammond Stadium. The Stone Crabs send Reinaldo Lopez (1-0, 20.25) to the mound to face off against Tyler Duffy (1-0, 4.50) in the finale.
