Tampa Bay Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson was optioned to the Stone Crabs on Tuesday afternoon, according to Rays Manager Joe Maddon. The right-hander has been struggling this season – in 27 starts, he is 10-8 with a 5.21 ERA – and more recently had a difficult outing against the Chicago White Sox, where he went two and a third innings and allowed five runs. Maddon mentioned that Hellickson will not pitch, but was sent to avoid the 10-day recall rule, as the Stone Crabs’ season is ending on September 1.
Hellickson was drafted in the fourth round of the 2005 draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. He played in the 2010 All-Star Futures Game and was named the 2011 American League Rookie of the Year.
