The rain but an end to a possible game winning rally as Thursday’s game between the Stone Crabs and the Tampa Yankees was suspended in the bottom of the ninth, tied 4-4.
The Stone Crabs broke the scoreless tie in the top of the second inning. Richie Shaffer led of the inning with a double to center, his twenty-fifth of the season. He then advanced to third on a passed ball. Alejandro Segovia drew a walk to put runners on the corners for the Stone Crabs. Willie Argo put the good guys in the board with a two run double to left to give the Stone Crabs a 2-0 lead.
Tampa got right into the game by scoring in the bottom half of the second inning. Taylor Dugas singled home Peter O’Brien to cut the lead in half.
The Stone Crabs increased their lead in the top of the third inning. Kes Carter was hit by a pitch to open the frame. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on an RBI single by Jake Hager to increase the lead to 3-1.
Roberto Gomez worked into a jam in the bottom of the third inning. Ali Castillo singled to lead off the inning followed by back to back walks to Jayson Nix and Curtis Granderson to load the bases for the Yankees. Mason Williams hit a sac fly to score the first run of the inning. Nix then scored on an error followed by a sac fly by O’Brien to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.
The Stone Crabs tied to rally in the top of the fourth by putting runners on the bases following back to back singled by Segovia and Argo. But Luke Bailey and Carter struck out to end the inning and the scoring chance.
Both pitching staffs settled down after the third and threw several scoreless innings before the Stone Crabs struck for another run to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. Drew Vettleson reached on an error with two outs to put a runner on the bases. Then Shaffer delivered his second double of the night, a fly ball off the left field wall to score Vettleson and tie the game 4-4.
The Yankees put the go-ahead run on the bases in the bottom of the ninth. But in what at the time looked like a unusual move, Brady Williams went to the bullpen for Nate Garcia right in the middle of an at-bat. But the pitching change delayed the game just long enough to allow the rain to settle in and the umpire crew to call a rain delay.
Play never resumed and the game was suspended tied 4-4. It will be finished Friday prior to the regularly scheduled game.
