The fans that waited out Tuesday’s rain delay at Roger Dean were treated to a great pitching duel between the Stone Crabs and the Palm Beach Cardinals. Both clubs went through 7 innings before a run crossed the plate, but when it was over the Stone Crabs were winners 2-1.
Stone Crabs starter Roberto Gomez had the slight advantage on the night. He held a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a single to Juan Castillo in the bottom of the sixth.
The Stone Crabs broke the scoreless tie in the top of the eighth inning. Jake DePew singled to left to open the inning. Manager Brady Williams then checked Willie Argo into the game to pinch run for DePew. Argo advanced to second on a sac bunt an later scored on an RBI single by Kes Carter. Carter score on an RBI single by Jake Hager to give the Stone Crabs a 2-0 lead.
Palm Beach scored a run of their own in the bottom half of the eighth. Castillo doubled home Anthony Garcia to cut the lead in half.
Both clubs tossed a scoreless ninth as the Stone Crabs held on for the 2-1 win.
Gomez picked up the win for the Stone Crabs while Lenny Linsky recorded the save. Kyle Hald was the losing pitcher for Palm Beach.
The series continues on Wednesday at Roger Dean Stadium. Ryan Carpenter will be on the mound for the Stone Crabs.
