The Stone Crabs lost to the Lakeland Flying Tigers in an extra inning thriller on Tuesday night at Charlotte Sports Park. The Stone Crabs rallied in the ninth to tie the game and force extra innings, but gave up two runs in the tenth to lose their sixth straight game.
Lakeland took the lead in the first inning on a solo homer by Avisail Garcia.
The Stone Crabs bounced back to tie the game in the bottom of the first. They loaded the bases following back to back singles by Jake Hager and Brett Nommensen and Richie Shaffer reaching by error. A bases loaded walk to Curt Casali tied the game at 1-1.
The Flying Tigers regained the lead in the third on lead-off homer by Mike Hernandez to give them a 2-1 lead.
The Stone Crabs took their first lead in the fourth inning. Shaffer singled to left to lead off the inning. Casali then drew a walk to put another runner on the bases. Hector Guevara drove both runners home with a homer to left field, giving the Stone Crabs a 4-2 lead.
The Flying Tigers scored again in the sixth. Garcia tripled to right and then scored on an RBI single by Aaron Westlake to pull within one 4-3.
Lakeland regained the lead in the ninth inning. John Murrian double home Chad Wright and Jason King to give them a 5-4 lead.
But Charlotte bounced back to tie the game in the home half of the ninth. Guevara doubled to left and scored on an error to tie the game and force extra innings.
We wouldn’t stay in extra innings for long. Eliazer Suero walked the bases loaded and then surrendered a two run single to King that gave Lakeland a 7-5 lead.
The Stone Crabs went down quietly in the bottom of the tenth to suffer the 7-5 loss.
Suero was charged with the loss for the Stone Crabs.
The Stone Crabs will try to avoid their second consecutive sweep in the series finale with Lakeland on Wednesday. Parker Markel will take the mound for the Stone Crabs.
