The Stone Crabs picked up their fifth walk-off win of the season by defeating the Dunedin Blue Jays 4-3 on Thursday night at Charlotte Sports Park. Despite being held hitless through the first five frames, the Stone Crabs rallied to tie the game and eventually win in walk-off fashion.
Dunedin took the lead in the first inning. Kevin Ahrens reached via a walk. He later scored on an RBI single by Ryan Schimpf to give them a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Jays extended their lead in the second inning. Jon Talley went deep to right with a solo home run to increase the lead to 2-0.
Dunedin pushed across their third and final run in the fifth inning. Sean Ochinck scored on an RBI single by Kevin Nolan to give them a 3-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs were held hitless through the first five frames thanks to Dunedin’s starting pitcher Nestor Molina. But the D-Jays went to the bullpen in the sixth inning and the Stone Crabs took advantage of the reliever, striking for three runs in the inning. Dustin Biell was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Hak-Ju Lee then followed with a single to center. Ty Morrison drove both runners home with a bunt single that was overthrown, allowing both Biell and Lee to score. Morrison later scored on a sac fly by Mike Sheridan to tie the game 3-3.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Bortnick reached base after being hit by a pitch. Sheridan laid down a sac bunt to move Bortnick into scoring position. Anthony Scelfo drew an intentional walk and then Mark Thomas singled to load the bases with one out. It was birthday boy Reid Fronk who delivered the game winning RBI with a sac fly to right, scoring Bortnick and giving the Stone Crabs the 4-3 walk-off win, their fifth of the season.
Mike Jarman picked up the win for the Stone Crabs. Jake Thompson pitched his fifth quality start in his last six games but did not factor in the decision.
The series resumes on Friday at Charlotte Sports Park. Kyle Lobstein will make the start for the Stone Crabs against Deck McGuire for Dunedin.
