Stone Crabs Move Into Top Spot With Win Over Daytona

The Stone Crabs took advantage of sloppy play by the Daytona Cubs for the second night in a row, walking away with a 12-6 win. The Stone Crabs used the errors to tack on seven unearned runs and move into sole possession of first place in the division.

The Stone Crabs took the lead in the first inning. Omar Luna doubled to left to get things going. Brett Nommensen followed with a single to right, a fielding error by the Cubs right fielder allowed both Luna and Nommensen to score and take a 2-0 lead.

Daytona fought back in the bottom of the first and doubled the Stone Crabs run total. Evan Crawford led off the inning with a single to center and then scored on an RBI triple by Logan Watkins. Watkins later scored on an RBI single by Matthew Cerda to tie the game. The Cubs took the lead when Michael Burgess cleared the bases with a two run homer to put the Cubs ahead 4-2.

The Stone Crabs pulled to within a run of the lead in the second. Anthony Scelfo tripled to right to lead off the inning. Mike Sheridan drove home Scelfo with a line drive to left, scoring Scelfo and pulling within a run of the lead 4-3.

The Cubs stretched their lead back to two runs in the bottom of the second. Crawford was hit by a pitch and later scored on an RBI single by Jae-Hoon Ha to put them back in front 5-3.

But the Stone Crabs took advantage of a few errors to grab the lead for good by pushing across six runs in the top of the third. Ty Morrison reached on an error to lead off the inning. Luna then doubled to left, moving Morrison to third. Morrison scored on a ground out by Mark Thomas. Then Tyler Bortnick reached on an error with Luna scoring on the play. Bortnick advanced to second on a single by Scelfo and later scored on an RBI single by Sheridan. Dustin Biell drove home two runs with a double to left and then later scored on a double by Matt Hall to give the Stone Crabs a 9-5 lead.

The Stone Crabs added another run in the fourth inning. Scelfo grounded into a force out with bases loaded to score Luna and increase the lead to 10-5.

Both clubs exchanged runs in the top of the seventh. The Stone Crabs started in the top of the seventh with Bortnick hitting a triple to lead off the inning. Then Scelfo brought him home with an RBI single. In the bottom of the inning, the Cubs pushed across a run on a bases loaded grounder by Crawford to push across Burgess.

The Stone Crabs pushed across their final run of the night in the eighth inning. Nommensen singled to right to put a runner on the bases. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and then later scored on a single by Thomas to give them the 12-6 margin of victory.

Adam Liberatore picked up the win for the Stone Crabs and Larry Suarez suffered the loss for the Cubs.

The series resumes with game three of the four game set on Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Jake Thompson will be on the hill for the Stone Crabs opposite Casey Harman for Daytona.
