The Stone Crabs were unable to recover from an early deficit as they fell to the Fort Myers Miracle, snapping a three game winning streak. They surrendered seven runs in the first two inning as they lost 9-3 on Saturday night at Hammond Stadium.
Fort Myers took the lead by scoring five runs in the first inning. They went to work loading the bases with Jonathan Goncalves drawing a walk, a Reggie Williams single and a walk by Aaron Hicks. Nick Romero hit a sac fly to score the first run of the inning. Then Anderson Hidalgo hit an RBI single to score Williams. Danny Rams cleared the bases with a three run homer to give the Miracle a 5-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs scored their first run of the night in the top of the second. Tyler Bortnick singled to center and then later scored on an RBI double by Omar Luna to put a run on the scoreboard.
The Miracle picked up two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Oswaldo Arcia struck a two run homer to increase the lead to 7-1.
The Stone Crabs scored again in the sixth inning. Mike Sheridan led off the inning with a single to center followed by a walk to Bortnick. Both runners advanced a spot following a wild pitch. Anthony Scelfo plated a run with a single to right, scoring Sheridan for the Stone Crabs second run of the night.
Fort Myers struck again in the seventh inning. Hidalgo doubled to left followed by a single by Rams. Ramon Santana picked up the RBI after he drove home Hidalgo to up the score to 8-2.
The Miracle increased their total by one more in the eighth inning. Jamaal Hawkins drew a walk to lead off the inning. Hawkins advanced to third on a single by Williams and later scored on an RBI single by Romero to give them a 9-2 lead.
The Stone Crabs posted their final run of the night in the top of the ninth. Scelfo and Luna delivered back to back singles to lead off the inning. Scelfo then scored on a passed ball. But they could not recover from the early hole as they suffered the 9-3 loss.
Kyle Lobstein was charged with the loss for the Stone Crabs. Pat Dean was the winner for Fort Myers.
The series concludes on Sunday night at Hammond Stadium. Merrill Kelly will start the finale against Tom Stuifbergen for Fort Myers.
