The Rays (1-3) dropped their third straight game, falling to the Orioles (2-0) by the score of 12-6 at Ed Smith Stadiums. The Orioles used three long balls to post four runs in the first inning and never looked back. In all, eight home runs were hit in today’s contest with only three of them coming from the Rays.
Today’s game featured several former Stone Crabs; Leslie Anderson, Nevin Ashley, Tim Beckham and Matt Bush.
Ashley made his spring debut, taking over behind the plate for Kelly Shoppach in the sixth inning. He had two plate appearances, striking out in the sixth inning then he got hit by a pitch in his second appearance in the eighth inning.
Anderson also made his debut today, entering in the sixth inning to pinch running and play first base for Casey Kotchman. He was 0 for 1, grounding out to second in the eighth inning.
Beckham took over shortstop from Sean Rodriguez in the sixth inning. He was 0 for 2 at the plate, grounding out to short in the seventh inning and then another ground out in the ninth inning.
Bush pitched the seventh inning and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits with a strikeout and 2 walks.
Andy Sonnanstine (2010 SC rehab) was the Rays starter and surrendered 6 runs on 6 hits with 5 home runs in 2 innings pitched. BJ Upton (2009 SC rehab) was 1 for 3 with a solo home run.
The Rays travel to Dunedin to face the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
